What is Literably & How Does it Work?

Literably is a website that works with K-8 students and teachers, it helps the teachers know the reading level, the difficulties and better monitor the progress of their students.

So the students read into their laptops, Ipads or smartphones while Literably is recording what they are reading.

Then Literably sends the recorded audio file to a "Literably scorer" who will need to listen to the student recorded audio and transcribe what he/she hears and point out any mispronounced words or mistakes

When the Literably scorer finishes transcribing the audio, he/she will send to Literably the transcribed document which Literably is going to send to the teachers.

Teachers find this useful because they will be able to know the fluency, comprehension and the accuracy of their students when reading.

Now that you know how Literably works you're probably interested to know what is your job as a Literably scorer or transcriber?

Below I give you all the info you need so keep reading 😉

What is your Job as A literably Scorer?

Literably gives you the opportunity to help the students improve their pronunciation and reading capabilities and make money doing so.

All you have to do is listen to the audio recordings of the students reading and you transcribe whatever you hear while, you do so you need to spot and point out things like:

  • Phonetic errors
  • Additions
  • Ommissions

Literably will give you the full text that the student was reading while Literably was recording and you need to type any words that are written in the text that the student did not pronounce.

After you are done and you need to rate the reading capability of the student and give them a score and send everything to Literably.

How Can You Apply for Literably?

So you're probably wondering what is the hiring process like.

Here's what you need to do to apply for Literably.

  1. Sign up as a scorer directly on their website.
  2. Carefully read their guides & instructions
  3. Transcribe 6 sample recordings (it takes 30 minutes)

After you sign up you will be redirected to a page where you can read all the instructions on how to get started doing this and more.

After you transcribe the 6 sample recordings, Literably is going to review your application and let you know whether you're hired or not.

How Long it Takes to Get Approved?

Many Literably members claim that it takes up to 12 weeks to get accepted!

Literably Requirements - Do You Need Experience?

So you're probably wondering if you need experience or not to get hired by Literably.

The good news is you DON'T need any experience.

If you already have some experience in transcribing it will make this job a walk in the park.

But if you don't have experience don't worry because all you have to do is transcribe the students mistakes only and not the whole audio.

The only requirement is you need to pass their test, as noted above they will give you 6 sample recordings to test you.

You're probably wondering if this test is hard or easy?

If you CLICK HERE you will read what people who went through this test say!

But before doing the test Literably gives you some training to help you learn how to transcribe correctly without making lots of mistakes.

The Literably Training

Since you can join Literably without having any experience, the latter is going to offer you some extensive training and help you become a good transcriber.

Literably, in the beginning is going to send you training recordings that you need to transcribe, these training recordings have been already transcribed before by other people or by the literably staff and they are used just to see if you can spot the same mistakes.

If you miss a lot of mistakes that is not good obviously, but if you're doing good and spotting lots of mistakes consistently  Literably is going to review all your transcriptions and even offer you feedback.

As you improve they will start to notice it and hire you as a contractor

What Equipment You Need to Work?

Literably recommends you to invest in high-quality of headphones.

It makes sense because you're going to listen to audio recordings and you need to hear everything in a super clear way so you pick up lots of mistakes.

In their instructions page, they recommend a specific set of headphones by Sony which cost $17 on Amazon.

I recommend you to also check out their phenomes chart which is going to help you transcribe non-words.

How Much Can You Earn With Literably?

I heard about Literably from a job posting on Ziprecruiter.com and it says that you can earn 10$ per hour to $20 per hour.

But in the literably instructions page, they say they are going to pay you based on the total minutes of the audio that has been accurately transcribed.

I took a snapshot from their page for you to read below:

Anyway, how much you earn greatly depends on how fast and accurate your transcribing is.

Obviously, in the beginning you're not going to be accurate and you'll surely not earn $20/hour.

But as you get better and more accurate your earnings will increase for sure.

How Does Literably Pay You?

Literably will pay you through Paypal every week on Fridays.

They are going to pay you based on the total minutes that were transcribed with accuracy.

A good thing about the payments is Literably covers all the PayPal fees which is something not a lot of companies do.

Is Literably a Flexible Work from Home Job?

Literably is absolutely a flexible work from home job, you can login in an afternoon and start doing the work that is available to you, there are no deadlines.

You can definitely do this as a part-time job.

How Much Does Literably Cost?

You can sign up as a Literably contractor for free, as a teacher you can join for free as well but you can only complete 5 recordings per month to try things out and explore the platform.

Is Literably Available Worldwide?

Yes, you don't have to be a native English speaker to join, you can join wherever you live in the world as long you can understand English without problems.

Literably Reviews - Positive or Negative?

Chances are you are curious to know what the actual members are saying about Literably right?

Below you can read some reviews from the Literably contractors (aka Scorers) and also from the teacher (in case you're a teacher and you want to see if this is worth it)

Literably Reviews from Scorers

I came across different reviews from Literably members on Reddit most of the reviews I read are complaints about how hard it is to make it to the finals and pass the 6 recordings test.

Most members say that they have made tons of mistakes that got them rejected, and when you get rejected you will need to wait a calendar year to re-apply.

Another negative review I read online is from a member that is unhappy about the fact there are international students recordings who speak English with an accent which make it VERY hard to understand.

Some students even say words that are not in the text and just whisper some random words which make it hard for the scorer to pick up.

Below you can see all the screenshots I took of the complaints I have talked about!

One member even said that Literably are notorious for finding an excuse to not pay the members.

You can read some of the reviews by the teachers on the screenshots below 🙂

Is Literably A Scam?

Literably is not a scam, I think it's a good opportunity for non-experienced transcribers to get trained and learn some basics of transcribing.

However, you need to keep in mind that it's not an opportunity that is going to make you quit your job because the earning potential is not big.

You will make only $10 hour or $20 if you're VERY good at it.

There is a better way to earn money that is actually worth it.

Here's How I Make Money Online!

Chances are you want to join Literably just because of money and transcribing is NOT something you actually enjoy.

If that's the case you're going to waste tons of time without any real earnings.

Transcribing itself is NOT a profitable business and it requires tons of energy and time which is NOT worth it.

I used to jump myself from site to site like these but until I heard about affiliate marketing my life changed.

I'm not driving fancy cars or stuff like that but I'm really earning a solid income thanks to this affiliate marketing business.

This business is simple all you have to do is start a website where you promote other people's products and earn affiliate commissions!

It requires a lot of hard work in the beginning because you need to do a lot of things right and you need to gain the trust of Google so they start sending you TONS of free visitors to your website.

That's what I did and now I earn a full-time income and guess what?

I was a complete newbie so you don't need experience to make this work.

  • Hi Anis! You really shared a good thought of earning money while staying at home and I have heard about this Literably before. But you haven’t mentioned in your article that ‘What kind of students means from which region, what accent would be the audios of?’ Along with you have mentioned somewhere at in you didn’t need any of training after going through the article I think that the Literably scorer should have good knowledge of Phonetics of a particular language only he/she will be able to find out misspelled words by the students.
But thanks for your post I will definitely guide someone now to work with Literably.

  • Literably seems like a good way to make some side income. It shouldn’t be so difficult to listen to what someone is saying. Except, when you’re not a native speaker of the English language. I’d rather stick to blogging because I have a problem hearing what English speakers said at times.

    Thanks for sharing.

    • Hi Louis, yeah definitely avoid Literably if you can’t understand English well, I recommend you to check out Wealthy Affiliate if you want to start a successful blogging career!
