What Are Domain Names?
Before anything else, let's get to know the main thing about this guide, domain names.
What are domain names?
They are basically the addresses of the websites you type on your browser.
For example, in this page, the domain name is, www.fulltimehomebusiness.com.
The computers we have today, use IP addresses. You are probably familiar with this term.
They are very important because computers use them to connect and communicate with each other.
However, it is a bit difficult for us to remember IP addresses because these are composed of a series of numbers.
And that's when domain names were created. They are used to identify addresses on the internet.
Parts of a Web Address
To better identify what domain names are, let's take https://www.thisistheexample.com.ph.
- Subddomain (www)
- Domain name (thisistheexample.com.ph)
- Top Level Domain (com)
- Second Level Domain (ph)
Most of the time, top level domains are used as a suffix to represent which one does the domain belong to.
Some of these are:
- com- commercial businesses; most common TLD
- gov- U.S. government agencies
- edu- Educational institutions such as universities
- org- Organizations (mostly nonprofit)
- mil- Military
- net- Network organizations
And usually, the second level domains specify the country. The one in the example uses ph which is for the Philippines.
But...

There's more to domain names than meets the eye.
If we use an analogy to domain names, then they are like real estate. They are the land or property in the world wide web.
That's is why we can earn money with them through buying and selling domain names.
How Does It Work?
Like I told you above, domain names are like real estate.

Flipping Domain Names is one of the most profitable online business ventures you could take upon. The margins are infinite you could earn from around a couple of bucks up to tens and thousands of dollars if you do the job right.I have been thinking of doing this since I have some capital to start off with because of the allowance I was given to, hopefully, I could acquire more ways to make money so that I may live independently and live with freedom on my back.Online business, after all, is something very portable, lucrative and easier than having a brick and mortar business that you need to manage every time. Great informative article about domain name flipping.I think I will be doing this in the near future.
Hello Rizza! Thank you for reading my article. I wish you good luck on your domain flipping journey. Research and learn more about it before starting.
Hi AdrianneThis is a really interesting topic that you have covered here about flipping domains, it’s definitely an area of making money online that you don’t hear too much about. I do have a couple of questions, when starting out how many domain names would you consider to make up a good portfolio and what is the minimum budget you would recommend when getting into this to have the best chance of success. Thanks again.
Hello, Dominic! You are absolutely right. Domain flipping is not something you always hear everyday. It can be so profitable, but a bit challenging to the new ones. When you are starting out, I recommend that you work on ONE domain only, first. Get to know the process and work on it. There are cheap domains out there that sell around $10 to $50. And you can make a hundred or even a thousand-dollar profit from them. I recommend having $10 to $50, when you are still starting.
I actually managed to sell a domain name on Sedo about four years ago now. It had been housing a health blog I was working on, but things didn’t turn out so profitably with it, so I was left with the domain. I think it went for just over $100 in the end, which is a great return due to it only costing about $11 to first register it. Shows how simple the whole process can be – it wasn’t even that clever a name!
Hello, Chris! $11 to $100? That’s already great! With more management and grooming, your domains would earn you a lot more than that, my friend.
