Before we jump into the TranscribeMe Review, let's get to know the concept behind it first, which is transcription. What is it?
Transcription is a type of data-entry job where a transcriber's main duty is to convert an audio or video file into a text file. This can be a recording of a speech, meeting, forum etc.
So basically, if you are a transcriber, all of have to do is to listen or even watch a video. Then you type every word into an electronic text document file on your computer.
In every transcription company, each one has rules that a transcriber must follow. An example is to provide the time stamp of each sentence. These rules may vary, including the format.
To be honest, it sounds easy. However, it is more challenging. Trust me. I tried it before.
You don't just simply type a word that you hear. You must make sure that it is correct. Moreover, your work must possess the correct grammar, context and pronunciation.
Also, expect that there will be parts that are inaudible! And you just can't try to guess them.
In fact, companies will only pay you once they are satisfied and if your work is accurate.
Although online transcription jobs are great, most of them will not pay you enough to have a full-time source of income!

One of the companies out there that offer transcription services is TranscribeMe! The founder, Greg Feerer and the current CEO, Alexi Dunayev, both started it in the year 2011.
Transcribe Me is a crowd sourcing transcription website. Over the years, it has been offering transcription services to businesses and companies.
Not just that, it has been serving a lot of people by giving them the opportunity to work for them at home and online! On that note, we will be focusing on working for TranscribeMe in this review, not the services of the company.
However, here are some of the services it offers.
How does TranscribeMe work?
Once you are accepted to work (we will discuss how you can join in the next section), you can start receiving audio files.
First things first, clients provide their files to TranscribeMe. Usually, these files are hours long. But you will not be working like this.
Once TranscribeMe has the file, they will run it through a speech recognition software. This is important for quality assurance later on.
Afterwards, the file will be cut into smaller ones. Then each piece will be ready to be transcribed. They may be 30 seconds long or more.
When you have the file, you can simply start making a transcript! Listen carefully and make sure your work is accurate.
Then you can submit your work when you are done. TranscribeMe will compare it with the result from the speech recognition software. If it is accurate enough, you will be paid.
Take note, TranscribeMe has a minimum quality requirement that your work must meet, which is 98%. That means, your overall error should only be 2%. If not, you won't get paid.
How to join TranscribeMe
The sign up process of becoming a transcriber for TranscribeMe is pretty straightforward.
First, you need to fill up a form. There, you have to provide some personal information such as your name, email address, password and even the languages you can speak.

The TranscribeMe exam process is an important part of joining the company, hence you must know everything about it.
The exam will verify your proficiency with the use of English grammar and punctuation; in addition, they will also ask you about specific questions that can be answered if you read their guide.
You can take the exam in their website portal. First, you will answer a set of multiple choice questions. You may also be asked to answer questions where you will have to type in your answer. Then, they will give you two audio recordings that you must transcribe.
They will give you two-chances to pass the exam. However if you don't pass the exam, you will have to wait 30-days to take the exam again.
TranscribeMe Review: Things you need to have
Apart from the sign up process and tests, there are other things that you need to have.
Unlike other companies out there that need prior experiences and a specific set of hardware and software requirements, TranscribeMe only requires you to have a computer or laptop, headphones and a stable internet connection.
Moreover, you must have a Paypal account because this sis where you will receive your payment.
How much can you earn working here?
Now let's discuss how much you will earn since this topic is an important factor to consider when applying for online jobs.
According to TranscribeMe, transcribers can earn around $20 to $22 per hour. However, take note that the files you will be working on are short ones that are around one minute. That means you will be earning $0.33 per minute or more.
If you transcribe medical and legal files, you will be earning higher. However, these files are more difficult and may require knowledge in the field.

However, there is one thing you should know. You will only be paid once you reach a total of 1 hour worth of file duration.
But once you get used to working, this will be accomplished easily.

The last thing I like about TranscribeMe is how ANYONE can join. You don't have to live in a specific country to sign up.
Other companies only hire people who in the United States or any specified country.
However, you better make sure that your country supports Paypal or else, you will not be paid.

TranscribeMe Review: Things I don't like about it
#1 Difficult job
The first thing I don't like about TranscribeMe is the whole concept about it which is transcription.
It is not as easy as listening to the files then typing what you hear. You really have to be accurate and apply correct grammar, spelling, pronunciation etc.
Moreover, there will be parts that are inaudible or hard to understand. So you will be working hours and listening to one section of the file again and again just to get the right word or sentence.
And yes, you will be going through all of this, and the pay rate is not even enough for a job this challenging.
#2 There is no guarantee that you can get work
You see, the thing is, the number of files depend on the clients. If TranscribeMe has no or just a few clients, obviously, you will not be guaranteed to have files to work on.
Meaning, you will be waiting and waste your time. There is no assurance that you can get a file to work on day by day.
Is TranscribeMe a scam?
Now to conclude this TranscribeMe Review, it is time for the final verdict. Is TranscribeMe a scam?
Well, you already saw it for yourself above! TranscribeMe is a legit website that offers transcription services and job opportunities. Moreover, it does pay in cash.
The only concern I have for it is the pay rate. If you are someone looking for a source of full-time income, I do not recommend you this. The job is a bit difficult and will only pay you a small amount of money.
