Let's formally start this Getty Images review by getting a brief background information about it.
Getty Images, co-founded by Mark Getty and Jonathan Klein, is a stock photography company. Furthermore, it is the most famous and widely-known in the industry today! In fact, it owns iStock another stock photography company.
Getty Images work in two ways. First is to provide people with high quality, royalty free images, videos, vectors, and other media for a price, of course.
Second, they pay people who provide them with photos, videos, etc.!
For the sake of this review, we will only talk about the opportunity of earning money with Getty Images.
Earning money through stock photo companies is great. But you are missing out a lot!

How does it work?
If you want to earn money in Getty Images, you will have to sign up for an account and become a contributor.
Basically, you can upload your photos via mobile or your computer. For videos and illustrations, you can use your computer only. Afterwards, Getty Images will review and check them out.
Whenever they have approved your work, it will already be visible in the website for people to see and purchase for license. Then you will be paid.
Having this license, they will have the ability to download photos and other media from the website. It could be for any purposes they want.
There will be possibilities that your work will be used in advertisements, TV and film, social media, magazines, newspapers, books and many more.
What do you have to do?

Joining Getty Images as a contributor is pretty straightforward. First and foremost, you need to download their "Contributor" by Getty Images app. Also, you must be 18 years old and above.
Afterwards, you will need to provide 3 to 6 samples of your photos, videos or illustrations. Moreover, videos should be upload via YouTube where they can review it.
Then you just need to wait for their confirmation whether you are accepted in Getty Images or iStock.
What you really have to do as a contributor
Getty Images and other stock photography companies as a lot of photos, videos and other media in their websites, available for the people.
With that, you have competition, right? So basically, being a contributor does not simply mean that you need to upload only. You need to optimize your works to be more visible to the clients. You really have to make sure if its is "sellable".
That is why you need to edit it and make it stand out among other pictures in a category. I would also like to add the importance of keywording to be able to compete against other photos.
Meaning, for each photo or media you upload, you need to add a description, location, date and many more. Moreover, you need to add relevant keywords.
This is pretty much the same as SEO. With this method, your works will be able to reach more clients.
Getty Images Salary
Whenever a customer purchases a license,. all contributors will earn a royalty. Basically, it is a percentage of the price that was paid by the customer.
There is no distinct or fixed amount of money that you can earn because it will differ based on your content and how many you have in your portfolio that customers need.

Getty Images pay their contributors either via Paypal or mailed check. If you are a non-U.S. resident, then you only have Paypal as the payment method.

Getty Images Review: Cons
#1 Lawsuit
Recently, Getty Images was sued by one of their super contributors for copyright infringement.
They were also served for misusing around 47,000 images! But then again, the contributors who stood up against Getty Images were kicked out from the stock photo company.
#2 Unfairly sue clients
There have been cases wherein Getty Images unfairly sues long-term clients for copyright infringement even though their licenses are still active!
Furthermore, these complaints come from the contributors of the company itself.
#3 Extortion?
There are also complaints regarding how Getty Images kind of "extorts" small businesses, using the courts.
An example is that Getty Images sends you a letter wherein it demands an amount of money to compensate for an image you downloaded before. But the twist is that you never knew about licensing!
Most of the businesses that experience this have no choice but to pay the fee.

Getty Images has some negative ratings and reviews online. These are some of their ratings from different websites:

#5 You get less than half of what clients pay.
Getty Images only gives you 15% for photos or vectors that you submit and 20% for videos. This is a very bad deal since you are the one doing most of the work, yet they take most of the profit. In addition, you won't see how many people have purchased your stock images or videos. This can mislead you into thinking that no one is buying your stock footage and that is why you are only earning a small amount.
#6 A Very Bad Customer Service
Getty Images does not allow you to edit or remove content that you have submitted to them on your own. For this, you have to contact them first, which can be a very tedious thing to do for such a simple task. Furthermore, they can also sell your content to other platforms while taking the majority of the sales for themselves.
This program is a lot better than earning money through stock photos!
Is Getty Images a scam?
To conclude my Getty Images review, it is time to answer whether it is a scam or its legit.
Is it a scam? No, I don't think so. It has been providing services ever since it started. Furthermore, it is well-known and a prestigious stock photo company. If it was a scam, it wouldn't reach that status right?
But then again, looking at the opportunity, I think it differ from other contributors. You might have another experience other than the negative ones. If you want a full-time online income, I do not recommend this.
However, if you love photography and making money out of it, then you can give this a try.
